stockdale was first formed in early 2018, masterminded by rapper/producer johdi as a vehicle for collaboration between various musicians, visual artists, and anyone else creatively inclined who happened to be around. Starting with weekly sessions of ten to twenty people, the idea to put out a mixtape under the group's name slowly crystallized. In a matter of months this project titled Home Again was completed with various members lending vocals, videos, design, and anything that was needed for the release. The result was a bubbly, youthful mashup of various identities, based in hip-hop, bedroom pop, and the kind of ineffable quality that the group would go on to be known for.
In the year that followed, stockdale began to refine itself and consolidate membership, with much of the larger collective disbanding to leave a core consisting of de facto leader and producer johdi, vocalists Nomé, pilgrim & D'fish, videographer Maxi Hachem, and designer Ruby Zeuner. With rapper Dream Boy and producer/guitarist Noah rounding out the roster in early 2019. During this time the group began work on their second full-length project and started playing local venues as well as small-scale festivals. Shortly before the release of the second LP, Buddy, rapper Dream Boy tragically passed away, leaving the group fragmented and unsure of what to do next.
In dealing with the loss they began work on their third album screensaver, which, following a rousing performance at the 2021 Haldern Pop Festival, was set to be released by the Haldern Pop Label in late 2022. screensaver proved to be the group's most ambitious work to date, with matured songwriting, and vocalists johdi & pilgrim helming the creative and sonic direction of the project. screensaver traded the playful chaotic energies of previous efforts for a more moody and atmospheric palette, befitting the air of grief that hung over the remaining members at the time.
In support of screensaver, stockdale played their first international shows with performances across the western United States, Canada, as well as notable European festivals Eurosonic and Fusion. The post-screensaver era saw the departure of visual directors Hachem and Zeuner as well as vocalist D'fish, leaving the current lineup of johdi, Nomé, pilgrim and Noah, who since 2023 have incorporated a fully-stocked band of musicians for live performances.
stockdale is currently working on their fourth full-length album and playing the European festival circuit in anticipation of its release.
